There’s Still a Better Choice!

There is an alternative to reducing funding for education, health care and human services… and it’s NOT bigger tax shifts to local property and sales taxes.

To grow New York’s economy we need to invest in New Yorkers.

  • Good jobs require educated New Yorkers, safe communities, affordable health care and reliable transportation. We can’t grow jobs in New York if we abandon New York’s families.

Cuts in education, health care and human services hurt all of us.

  • When the State cuts funding for children, seniors, families and the environment, real people are hurt. Education, health and human services are essential for our families and communities to thrive.

Instead of hiking local property and sales taxes we need a state tax system that’s fair to working families.

  • When Albany cuts the state budget, local property and sales taxes soar. Cuts in state spending on schools, health care and services are shifted to local taxpayers who can least afford it. Meanwhile, large corporations and high-priced consultants receive special treatment and have used their political connections to win huge tax loopholes and pricey-private contracts.

A Fair Budget Should Invest in New York Families. With New York facing a $5 billion budget shortfall, it’s time for the Governor and Legislature to close the loopholes and end the special treatment of the favored few:

  • Close loopholes that allow multi-national corporations to avoid state taxes by hiding income and shipping profits out of New York – savings $1 billion.
  • Stop sweetheart deals to private consultants that are being overpaid to do the jobs state workers can do better – savings $250 million.
  • Lower drug prices for state and local governments by using New York’s purchasing power to force lower prescription drug prices- savings $1 billion.
  • End the abuse of the Empire Zones and other economic development programs that don’t create jobs - savings $ 250 million.
  • Give back the Nickels. Make the beverage bottling industry return unclaimed bottle deposits – generating $179 million.
  • Make polluters pay for Governor Pataki’s plan to cap greenhouse gas emissions – generating up to $500 million.

Stop the tax shift to local taxpayers. Stop the cuts that hurt us all.
